Metro Schools honors staff at 2017-18 Teacher of the Year banquet
Metro Schools hosted its annual Teacher of the Year awards on May 2, honoring 140 teachers and three principals for their hard work and dedication to Metro Schools.
The 140 teachers – one from every district-managed school – were chosen by their colleagues and principals as the epitome of a model educator. The Teacher of the Year program provides recognition to teachers on a district, regional, state and national level. To select the district-wide winners, teachers were scored on characteristics of a well-rounded educator including relationships with students, leadership and overall academic performance of students.
From the school-level winners, nine district-level finalists were selected – one winner and two runners-up from each school tier. District-level finalists for Principals of the Year and Substitute Teachers were also honored.
The three tier-level winners were included in the regional Teacher of the Year competition. Cicely Woodard, West End Middle Prep, is a regional finalist and is advancing to Tennessee Teacher of the Year with the potential to advance to the National Teacher of the Year in 2018.
