The FANS, Inc. Funds New Tutoring Program for Student Athletes

Program will support academic enrichment in 11 middle schools

Middle school student athletes in 11 Metro schools are getting added support in the classroom and on the field through a new enrichment program from a local non-profit. The Foundation for Athletics in Nashville Schools, Inc. (The FANS, Inc.), an organization that supports and promotes Metro athletic programs, has launched a tutoring program called “The FANS Camp,” which is supported by $3,000 grants for each school.

“School athletics build character, discipline, teamwork and pride. When we grab a student’s attention with sports, there’s an opportunity to focus that attention toward academics,” said Mark North, president of The FANS, Inc. “We want to support schools in expanding opportunities for students to participate in sports and at the same time, enrich their academic experience.”

Every student athlete at the participating schools will be required to take part in The FANS Camp during his or her sport’s season, with optional attendance available in the offseason. The middle schools included in the program this year are: Goodlettsville, Gra-Mar, Jere Baxter, Joelton, John Early Museum Magnet, Madison, Margaret Allen, McKissack, McMurray, Neely’s Bend and Wright.

Each school will receive a $2,000 grant to pay for staffing the tutoring program and an additional $1,000 for athletic equipment and support. The program is funded through a grant from the Memorial Foundation and other generous donations. The FANS Camp at Goodlettsville Middle is specifically funded by First Bank of Goodlettsville.

“We always want to put the emphasis on ‘student’ in ‘student athlete,’” said Roosevelt Sanders, Metro Schools’ director of athletics. “This program aligns perfectly with our vision for co-curricular activities like sports. When students are engaged in school and want to be there every day, it makes instruction more meaningful. We are grateful to The FANS, Inc. for their continued partnership and support of our kids.”

Programs at these schools are fully funded for the remainder of the school year. Looking forward, The FANS, Inc. would like to expand the program across Metro middle schools and eventually to high school freshmen student-athletes.
