Glendale Spanish Immersion Elementary is a National Blue Ribbon School
Metro Schools proudly congratulates Glendale Spanish Immersion Elementary School for being a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School. Glendale is one of just six schools in Tennessee to earn such an honor this year from the U.S. Department of Education.
“At Glendale, we strive for excellence. This is possible due to our intentional staff, highly motivated students and supportive parents. It is truly a team effort, and I am so proud of them,” said Glendale Principal Jeanna Collins.
Glendale has a long history serving the Oak Hill community and re-opened in 2004 as a choice elementary school with an emphasis in Spanish, becoming a full Spanish Immersion school by 2008.
Glendale is, “a strong, close-knit community with little turnover among students and staff,” former Glendale principal Sue Clark wrote at the time the school’s award application was submitted. “Parents are highly engaged and support the teachers and staff throughout the year through their actions and donations.”
The National Blue Ribbon Schools program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. The award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools flag gracing a school’s building is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning. National Blue Ribbon Schools are an inspiration and a model for schools still striving for excellence.
“It is an honor to celebrate schools that are helping their students grow and achieve at consistently higher levels. The six Tennessee public schools that were recognized as 2016 National Blue Ribbon Schools today serve as clear examples of how we can improve outcomes for all students in our state,” the Tennessee Department of Education said in a statement. “We commend these schools, especially the leadership of the dedicated educators in their buildings who work tirelessly to ensure that their students are prepared to take advantage of opportunities in the future.”
Glendale will be formally recognized for being an exemplary, high-performing school at an awards ceremony on Nov. 7 and 8 in Washington, D.C.
