John Early Museum Magnet Middle Prep junior curators present at “The People’s Guide to Nashville” book launch
A group of 12 John Early Museum Magnet Middle Prep students who served as junior curators presented at the launch of the upcoming book, The People’s Guide to Nashville, held on Friday, Dec. 11 at Vanderbilt University’s Curb Center.
John Early Museum Magnet Middle Prep is included in the book, which brings attention to organizations and attractions that are off the beaten path in Nashville.
Students interacted with college professors, students and community leaders Friday night as they informed the audience about the museum collection at John Early.
Students will have the opportunity to collaborate further on the project as they conduct oral history interviews and create additional articles based on those interviews.
Vanderbilt University says the guide will serve as an educational tool about Nashville’s cultural, political, economic and social justice movements, focusing on sites that “surface place-stories that have been ignored and celebrate cultural resistance resilience and creativity that shapes the city,” according to Vanderbilt.

John Early fifth graders were recently selected as Belle Meade Plantation junior docents
Daysia Westmoreland, Taylor Williams, and Allison Vargas were selected to serve as 2016 Junior Docents at the Belle Meade Plantation. The students completed an application and oral interview before they were chosen to be a part of the program, according to school officials. As junior docents, they will learn and interpret the history of Belle Meade Plantation and participate in workshops like “Working with Primary Sources”, “Caring for Horses” and “Victorian Games & Entertainment.”
The junior docents also will participate in trivia competitions, sleepovers, canon firing demonstrations and other fun activities.
John Early curators and Robert Churchwell docents have had a busy fall semester
Since the ribbon cutting for the new John Early museum addition in October, John Early students have presented to more than 150 visitors and students.
The visitors included potential families who are considering sending their own students to John Early, new business and community partners and North Nashville High School alumni. In addition, John Early students now mentor new second grade docents at Robert Churchwell Museum Magnet Elementary.
The two museum schools started a Big Buddy / Lil’ Buddy Museum Mentoring Program in November. This allows the middle prep students to coach their little buddies on public speaking skills. The buddies focus on body language, confidence and voice inflection — important skills required by museum docents and curators.
The program helped prepare students for November when the second graders served as tour guides for their widely celebrated Negro League Baseball exhibit. The second graders learned from their mentors so well, according to school officials, that they were featured on Nashville Public Radio and a video created by the Nashville Sounds. The next project for the buddies is to create an online version of the exhibit which will launch next semester.
