Obviously true: Music City has one of the best music education programs in the country
For the second year in a row, Metro Schools is being recognized for having one of the top music programs in the country. The NAMM Foundation announced last week that the district is once again designated as one of its Best Communities for Music Education (BCME). Metro Schools is one of a few hundred districts nationwide to earn the honor, which is given for strong and consistent efforts in sustaining music education.
“Thanks to the incredible collaboration we have seen through Music Makes Us, Metro Schools’ music programs have never been stronger,” said Laurie Schell, director of Music Makes Us. “The entire Music City community has brought us to this point, and we very proudly wear this recognition as a badge of honor.”
The BCME survey requires districts to answer detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by the Institute for Educational Research and Public Service of Lawrence Kansas, an affiliate of the University of Kansas.
“Music is one of the primary ways we engage our students in school beyond core academics, and it works,” said Director of Schools Dr. Jesse Register. “Growing and strengthening the music program through Music Makes Us is one of my proudest accomplishments in Metro Schools. I want to personally thank the community partners who have made it possible.”
Last year, the University of Kansas released a landmark study of music education in Nashville finding a definite relationship between musical participation and student engagement and achievement. Those conclusions were strengthened by a study from Northwestern University this school year that found enhanced brain function in at-risk children who participated in music programs.
