Winter weather is coming. Here is what you need to know about schools.
UPDATE (March 4, 2015, 3:00 p.m.): All Metro Schools will be closed on Thursday, March 5, 2015, due to the threat of severe winter weather.
Here we go again. Just when you thought it was warming up for good, another round of winter weather could be on the way.
Just like everyone else, we are watching the weather forecasts very closely and get regular updates from the National Weather Service. No decision has been made yet about closing or opening schools later this week. That call will be made in at the appropriate time. But the The Snow Patrol is standing by and will follow the usual procedure: driving the roads to assess any potential safety issues for school buses. As soon as we know the decision, you will too. It will be posted to Facebook and Twitter first. We will also alert the media and do a callout.
Safety will always be the number one priority in any decision we make for your children, including closing schools.
A lot of folks are asking us about the waiver available from the Tennessee Department of Education that allows district to not have to make up school days. Depending on what happens this week, we may apply for a waiver. If we are granted a waiver, it would not affect make up days March 18-20.
Regardless of any decision about a waiver, all Metro Schools will be open for regular school days March 18-20.
These dates were published as potential make-up days on the district calendar back in 2013 and approved by the state as make-up days. They have already been announced and published as make-up days, and we are now just two weeks away. If we do apply for and get a waiver it could prevent us from having to make up days May 28-29.
But again, that all depends on what happens tomorrow, Thursday and Friday of this week. Let’s keep our fingers and toes crossed for no snow!
