CONTEST: Design a logo for school cafés and you could win an iPad!
Metro Schools and Metro Public Health partner to promote healthy eating in schools
Metro Schools and the Metro Public Health Department are partnering to promote healthy eating at school through a contest for middle and high school students. The Metro Schools Nutrition Services Department is asking students to submit their designs for a new departmental logo or mascot. If their design is chosen, they could win an iPad or Visa gift cards.
“We are proud of the work we do and of the major improvements in our school cafés,” said Spencer Taylor, director of Metro Schools Nutrition Services Department. “We exist to serve our students and make sure they get nutritious meals every school day. We can’t wait to see to designs they come up with to represent this department.”
The Nutrition Services Department has grown and changed a great deal since new leadership took over in 2012. The meals are the healthiest they have ever been, meeting strict USDA guidelines and using more fresh ingredients. Recipes are carefully crafted to deliver tasty, appealing and nutritious breakfast and lunch, with scratch or quick-scratch cooking used whenever possible. Children who may not get a variety of healthy foods at home can always count on tossed salads and fresh fruit in their school cafés. Children who may have never tasted foods like kiwi or tilapia can get them at school and maybe bring those new tastes back home.
“Feeding children will always be our central mission, but we also look at ourselves as educators,” said Taylor. “We need to make sure students understand the choices they are making and to expose them to new foods they may never have seen before.”
Thanks to the Community Eligibility Provision through the USDA, every student in Metro Schools can eat breakfast and lunch at no cost to their family every day. Because of this, school cafés are serving more meals to more students than ever before, an average of 20,000 more meals every day when compared to last year. The department hired more than 200 additional café staff this year to meet skyrocketing demand.
Nutrition Services leaders want their new logo or mascot to reflect the massive changes that have taken place and reflect the department’s healthy food focus and appeals to families.
All middle and high school students are welcome to enter the contest. They can submit a logo design, mascot design or both. The grand prize is an iPad, second prize a $300 Visa gift card and third prize a $150 Visa gift card.
Before officially entering the contest, a student’s parent or guardian must complete and submit an application. The signed application gives consent for the student to participate in the contest and for the artwork to be used by Metro Schools. Students can pick up applications in their school cafés.

- Design Entry Deadline is February 16, 2015.
