North Sports Report – November 21, 2013

Because It’s Fun

Are you looking for a reason to attend high school basketball games? Here it is – pure and simple… You will have fun! The North Sports Report attended this week’s game between the Hunters Lane Warriors and the Maplewood Panthers. The girls’ game went down to the wire with an electrifying finish, but even the little things were exciting, like the teams’ shoes – the Panthers donned the elegant maroon (actually, I call it Maplewood Red) shoes, and Hunters Lane’s fluorescent orange lit up the gym. The crowd was large and lively for a Tuesday night game and included a toddler who played peek-a-boo with the NSR during timeouts, and even a Gra-Mar Middle School cheerleader arrived to encourage the teams. Maplewood students painted bronze like statues with Maplewood Red lettering chanted “Defense!” along with Principal Woodard. The game presentation had the feel of an NBA game as the expert PA announcer – none other than Scott Wallace – introduced the new dance troupe: “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Pantherettes, the purrrr of east Nashville.” Fantastic!

Maplewood's spirit is... colorful.

Maplewood’s spirit is… colorful.

The Pantherettes, the purrrrrr of East Nashville.

The Pantherettes, the purrrrrr of East Nashville.

Think about it. When was the last time you just took the time to have some fun? Go to a game!

Signing Day – Tulane Green Wave Volleyball

Congratulations to Hume-Fogg’s Sarah Ray who signed this week to take her volleyball and education to the next level at Tulane University. Tulane’s head coach Sinisa Momic had high praise: “Sarah Ray can contribute to our team in many ways: she is a tall, athletic player who can be very good as a hitter/blocker, but also has a strong all-around game.” Congratulations!

East Nashville Magnet Stadium

Since the East Nashville Eagles resurrected their football program, they have played without an on-campus stadium. With some help from the community, that’s going to change. A group of East alumni and community leaders led by Junior Ward has started the push for a privately funded stadium on campus. Breaking News – Legend Retires

Overton head football coach Terry Anderson announced his retirement this week after a 40-year coaching career. The impact of his influence on the young men he coached will be felt throughout Nashville for generations. Thank you and congratulations!

See You In December

The NSR is off next week to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday with lots of family, football and food – all with a spirit of gratitude for the opportunity to share the joy of public school athletics in Nashville.
