Annual History Lesson – Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” Strikes Again

In sports with a playoff system, most teams end their season with a disappointing loss. That’s just the nature of the beast. About this time each year, the North Sports Report contemplates the end of the season that comes so suddenly in the playoffs. Although consoling disappointment with historical quotes rarely comforts the defeated, the lesson from Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” quote applies to all of us no matter our venture, and bears repeating again this year.

“It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold timid souls who knew neither
victory nor defeat.”

Some great match-ups on the gridiron this week!

The Antioch Bears look to improve their playoff chances as they host the Hunters Lane Warriors.

The undefeated and 4th ranked Overton Bobcats (5-0 in District 12AAA, 8-0 overall) and the McGavock Raiders (4-1 in District 12AAA) look to stake their claim to the District Championship in a huge match-up at McGavock.

In other action:

  • Cane Ridge Ravens travel to Hillwood Hilltoppers;
  • Glencliff Colts host Hillsboro Burros;
  • Maplewood Panthers take the long trip to East Tennessee to face state power Alcoa;
  • East Nashville Eagles, ranked 9th in the state, travel to Nashville Christian;
  • Pearl-Cohn Firebirds, ranked 6th in the state, head over to Franklin Road to play FRA; and
  • Stratford Spartans travel to Marshall County.
  • The Whites Creek Cobras have the week off.
