North Sports Report – September 12, 2013
by Mark North, president of The Fans, Inc
Friday Night = Football Night = Family Night = Community Night
TWow! The atmosphere at Stratford was fantastic Friday night. Families tailgating outside the gates, an elementary school PTO supporting the high school, friendly faces and greetings met the North Sports Report even before we reached the ticket booth. The stands were full, the bands for Stratford and Pearl-Cohn were rocking, the football was excellent, and everyone had a good time. Belmont University students were recognized at halftime for their volunteer work in cleaning and painting the stadium; and the stadium looked great. Nothing beats a festive, family-friendly Friday night of football!
Alumni Alert: Antioch Alum / Marine in the National Spotlight
MTSU student and former Antioch Bear Steven Rhodes made the rounds on television news shows and was recognized nationally for his service to his country as a Marine and for standing up to the NCAA when it ruled that he was ineligible to play college football due to his previous military service. Merely stating the NCAA’s position on the issue underscores its absurdity. Nevertheless, Steven appealed through the appropriate channels until common sense prevailed and he suited up for the Blue Raiders of MTSU. Good luck this season and thank you for your service.
Football This Week: Two Nights are Better than One
The Pearl-Cohn Firebirds will be featured on WUXP Channel 30 in a regionally televised game on Thursday night at Pearl-Cohn. The Firebirds host MBA in the battle of two undefeated teams. Kickoff is at 7:00pm. If you can’t make it to the game, tune in to the broadcast!
The rivalry games continue this week and the NSR will be in attendance as the Hunters Lane Warriors host the Whites Creek Cobras in a showdown of two hungry teams from the north edge of Davidson County.
In other games:
- Antioch Bears host Station Camp;
- Hillsboro Burros travel to the Overton Bobcats who feature running back Justin Martin and his 200 yards per game average.
- Stratford Spartans look to defend their home turf (aka Buster Boguskie Field) against Rossview;
- McGavock Raiders travel south to Franklin;
- Maplewood Panthers head down to CPA;
- Hillwood Hilltoppers play at Father Ryan;
- Glencliff Colts go to Kenwood;
- East Nashville Eagles travel north to Westmoreland; and
