Game Night: More than the Game
Have you been to a high school athletic event yet this year? The cadence of a drum beat marks the band’s arrival and bursts into an all out bleacher rocking performance even before the band takes the field at halftime; the precision, athleticism and teamwork of the cheerleading squads pep up the crowd; the friendly greetings from concession stand volunteers; the arrival of friends and colleagues supporting the school; the lyrical recitations of the uniquely talented stadium PA announcers keeping the crowd informed of concession stand specials, community sponsors, student-athlete nicknames, officiating miscues etc…; and at this time of year, the beautiful sunset just before halftime.
Oh, and it’s not just football. Golf, Cross Country, Volleyball and Girls Soccer can all be riveting spectator sports when you support the hardworking student-athletes and coaches.
For the next three months, NSR will find its Friday night sustenance from perfectly grilled concession stand burgers. The ambience, company, and fine cuisine cannot be beat! Join me for dinner at the game…I’ll see you there!
Alumni Alert: College Football Season Kicks-off
Some of NSR’s favorite alumni will be in action this weekend as college football gets started. Vanderbilt’s Caleb Azubike (McGavock), Tennessee Tech’s Ladarius Vanlier (Maplewood), Western Kentucky’s Joseph Occhipinti (Hillsboro), Chattanooga’s A. J. Hampton (Hume-Fogg/Hillwood), Tennessee’s James Stone (Maplewood) and others will take the field starting Thursday.
Legend Alert: The Great Bonnie Sloan
One of the greatest linemen to ever play high school football in Nashville was honored this past weekend when the city of Hendersonville announced that Sunday was Bonnie Sloan Day. An alumnus of Litton High School and member of the Metro Nashville Public Schools Sports Hall of Fame, Bonnie became the first deaf player drafted in the NFL. Bonnie’s courage is an inspiration to everyone who faces obstacles on the way toward their goal … i.e. an inspiration to everyone!
Overton’s Student Newspaper Goes Online
Overton High School’s new online student newspaper Bobcat Beat includes a Sports section. The NSR was interviewed recently by an outstanding student journalist for a piece that will run when there is a slow news day. Congratulations on the online newspaper and keep up the good work.
Game of the Week
The NSR is headed to Glencliff to see the stampeding Glencliff Colts host the high-flying East Nashville Eagles. The only match-up of two MNPS schools this week promises non-stop action as two hungry teams face off.
