North Sports Report – July 2013

by Mark North, president of The Fans, Inc

Back to School… Back to Sports

Practice for Fall sports starts immediately, even before school starts. Golf, Cross-Country, Volleyball, Girls Soccer, Football and Cheerleading are gearing up for a run at state championships, and that run starts with practice. Good luck to all the coaches, student-athletes, band members, parents, fans, concessions volunteers, public address announcers, scoreboard operators, mascots, referees…. Oh man, it’s going to be a great season!

Legend Retiring

The North Sports Report will miss seeing Coach Bubba Spears on the sideline this season. Coach Spears retired as Hillwood’s football coach after a stellar career shaping young lives and influencing countless student-athletes. Good luck, Coach!

Alumni Alert: Maplewood’s James Stone

2010 Maplewood graduate James Stone is the center for the Tennessee Vols’ football team, starting all 12 games last year. Stone has been named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which is given to the best center in collegiate football. He shows the Maplewood Panther pride every time he takes the field.  Read about him in The City Paper.

Alumni Alert: High School Lesson Saves Life

Did you ever sit in class wondering if you will ever use what you’re learning after you graduate?  Will it ever make a difference?  Michael Shoenfield, a 2010 graduate and member of the Hume-Fogg wrestling team, and presently a Vanderbilt cheerleader, learned CPR as part of a high school class at Hume-Fogg.  He learned the lesson well.

When the schools decided to teach CPR, I imagine someone said, “It will be a success if we save one life.”  Well, mission accomplished.

Alumni Alert: Video Game Hero

2013 Hillsboro graduate and Freshman kicker for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, Joseph Occhipinti appears in the NCAA14 video game as a mild-mannered kicker with superhuman leg strength. Actually, he appears as simply a member of the Western Kentucky football team.  In real life, Occhipinti is a mild-mannered kicker with superhuman leg strength.

Football Summer 7-on-7

Congratulations to the Hillsboro Burros who reigned victorious at the Vandy 7-on-7 football tournament.  This is going to be an exciting MNPS football season!
