First Lady Michelle Obama to speak at Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Magnet Graduation

Event set for May 18 at Tennessee State University’s Gentry Center

Graduates in the class of 2013 at Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Magnet School will have an especially memorable graduation thanks to a special graduation speaker: First Lady Michelle Obama.

This morning, Principal Schunn Turner shared the news with students at an assembly in the school auditorium featuring a video of the First Lady announcing her plans. The school applied for the opportunity and received official word late last week. There will be no public tickets available to the Saturday, May 18 event.

“We are very excited Mrs. Obama is coming to our graduation,” said Turner. “This will be the event of a lifetime not only because it is the only high school graduation our seniors will have, but also because we will share the celebration with the First Lady.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. Academic Magnet School serves nearly 1,200 students in grades 7 through 12 with a curriculum that emphasizes mathematics and science. Housed in the historic Pearl High School building, MLK is consistently ranked among the best public schools in the nation for its academic rigor and consistently high graduation rate.

The school recently unveiled a community-supported wellness center and students have been active in planting and caring for a community garden at the nearby community center; both efforts align with First Lady Michelle Obama’s and Nashville Mayor Karl Dean’s healthy lifestyle initiatives.
